🚚🎮 BeamNG.drive 0.40: split-screen, Bob and a new truck – here's what's new

Local split-screen for up to 64 players, real occupants, the Cherrier Percheron and DLSS/FSR: every highlight at a glance – and what it means for your BeamMP server.

On October 19, 2026, BeamNG released version 0.40 of BeamNG.drive. The update brings one of the community's most-requested features: local split-screen multiplayer. On top of that, occupants now actually sit in your vehicles, there's a new European truck, a full suite of upscaling options and a solid round of optimizations.

🖥️ Split-screen: play together on one screen

You can start split-screen right from the main menu by adding participants and picking Freeroam or a game mode. Or select Split-Screen from the pause menu while you're already on a map. On PC it supports up to 64 players (if you have the hardware and enough input devices), on PS5 up to 4.

  • Freeroam: everyone starts together at a random spot, and each player gets a vehicle suited to the map with their own color and their own gearbox, clutch assist and throttle assist settings.
  • Seven game modes: Race (with more than 85 track layouts), Drag Race, Pursuit, Derby, Drift, Rock Crawling and Soccer – each with its own settings for layouts, laps, score goals and penalties.
  • Assign input devices freely: one player can use a wheel and pedals, another a gamepad.

🧍 Meet Bob: walking mode and real occupants

Walking mode has a new character model – and you can now see yourself in mirrors. More importantly, occupants actually sit inside vehicles now: each one adds 89 kg to the seat and the vehicle, is fully simulated in JBeam and wobbles along when you drive hard. That noticeably changes handling – rally cars, for example, now have a more realistic weight distribution.

In split-screen you can get out of your own vehicle and hop into a friend's: they drive, you mess with the interior. To make that work, the classic driver camera has become a general occupant camera that works from any seat.

🚛 New vehicle: Cherrier Percheron

The Cherrier Percheron is a European cab-over semi truck from the early 2000s and, according to BeamNG, the most interactable vehicle in the game so far – with interior lighting, a working sunroof, storage lockers and a tilting cab.

  • Cabs: S (day cab) plus L and XL with a sleeper bunk.
  • Frames: five lengths from 6.17 m to 9.80 m, 2 to 5 axles, more than 50 setups – from road-going 4x2s to all-terrain 8x8s.
  • Powertrain: a 12.8-litre turbocharged inline-six with 310 to 500 hp, paired with a 12-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic.
  • Upfits: tractor unit or rigid truck with a flatbed, box body, concrete mixer or tanker (fuel or foodstuffs).
  • Matching trailers: new FPU semi and rigid trailers in several axle layouts. There's also a dinosaur statue as cargo – and yes, it floats.

✨ Graphics: DLSS, FSR 4, XeSS and new reflections

  • Upscaling and anti-aliasing: NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR 3 and FSR 4, Intel XeSS and SMAA T2x, plus a sharpness slider and multi-monitor upscaling.
  • Lighting and reflections: screen-space reflections for vehicles, glass and water, softer shadows and less shimmering.
  • Lower CPU load: bindless rendering on Vulkan and Direct3D 12 reduces CPU overhead in scenes with lots of objects.
  • Redesigned graphics menu: settings are grouped more clearly, including a resolution scaling slider.
  • VR: Direct3D 12 via OpenXR is now supported.

🛠️ More changes

  • New “First Drive” tutorial: replaces the old Freeroam tutorial and helps newcomers get started.
  • New main menu: large tiles for Freeroam, Split-Screen and Quick-Start, everything else lives under “More...”.
  • Missions: the Italian trucking missions now use the Percheron, and there's a new delivery mission, “TastiCola Driver”.
  • Rally: default pacenotes switch from “Pro” to “Enthusiast” so visual pacenotes work. Modders can build their own 3D countdown clocks.
  • Maps: lots of fixes for West Coast USA and Italy, plus better performance in dense foliage.
  • Performance: mods mount faster, and the vehicle selector and traffic AI are optimized. If your frame rate stays below 25 FPS, the game now tells you.
  • Windows on Arm: native Arm builds are now available (without the Steam overlay).

🌐 Split-screen is local – online play needs BeamMP

One thing to keep in mind: the new split-screen mode is local multiplayer. Everyone plays on the same PC or console. If you want to drive with friends in different places over the internet, the multiplayer mod BeamMP with your own server is still the way to go.

  • BeamMP and 0.40: on release day, the BeamMP team published BeamMP 4.23.0 with support for BeamNG.drive 0.40, for now as a pre-release on GitHub. As soon as the BeamMP launcher rolls out the update, you can play online as usual. No new server version is needed: in our test, BeamMP 4.23.0 with BeamNG.drive 0.40 ran without problems on a server with the current server version 3.9.3.
  • Re-enable your mods: BeamNG.drive 0.40 turns off all mods after the update, including BeamMP. Re-enable them in the mod manager. In the new main menu, you'll find BeamMP under “More...”.
  • Check your mods: vehicle and map mods on your server should be compatible with 0.40. After the update, check whether the mod authors have released new versions and swap the files if needed. The “show possibly broken mods” button has been removed from the game because it produced too many false positives.
  • Everyone on the same version: to make sure everyone can join, all players should have the update installed.
