The best Project Zomboid mods in 2026 for your server

Eleven mods for Build 42 that also work in multiplayer, the most important classics for Build 41 servers, and how to add mods to your server.

Since the end of July 2026, Build 42 has been the stable version of Project Zomboid. Version 42.20 went stable on July 29, the current version is 42.21. Since October 27, The Indie Stone tests new versions on the new "Pre-Release" branch first, currently with 42.22. For server owners this means: many well-known mods now exist for Build 42, but some classics are still Build 41 only.

For this list we checked every mod on its Steam Workshop page: does it run on Build 42, is it meant for multiplayer, and is it still maintained? Subscriber numbers are rounded and as of November 2, 2026.

Quality of life

1. Better Sorting

Better Sorting puts inventory items into more sensible categories and tweaks some names. On servers where players share storage, things are much easier to find. According to the author, the mod works with Build 41, Build 42 and in multiplayer. It has over 3.3 million subscribers.

2. Has Been Read

This mod marks books and other media your character has not read yet or only partly read. While looting you see at a glance what is worth taking, without checking every title. The author confirms Build 41 and Build 42 Stable, including multiplayer. About 2.9 million subscribers.

3. Simple Status

Simple Status shows your character's stats as compact bars, so you no longer have to guess your character's state from the icons at the edge of the screen. You can move the bars freely. According to its description it works in single player, co-op and on dedicated servers. About 710,000 subscribers.

Progression and character

4. Skill Recovery Journal

On multiplayer servers, death hurts most because weeks of progress are gone. With the Skill Recovery Journal your character writes skills and learned recipes into a journal. After death, the new character reads it and gets the progress back. The mod needs two libraries: errorMagnifier (2896041179) and Mod Update and Alert System (3077900375). About 2.8 million subscribers.

5. Dynamic Traits and Expanded Moodles

With this mod, traits are no longer just a choice at character creation. Fitness, strength, weight and habits change your character's traits over time. It also adds addictions such as smoking or caffeine and extra status indicators. According to the author it works in single player, when hosting and on dedicated servers. It requires the Moodle Framework (3396446795). Important: the author advises against removing the mod from a running Build 42 save.

6. Evolving Traits World

Evolving Traits World follows a similar idea and is the successor of the popular More Traits, which its author no longer develops. Traits develop over time through play. The mod needs additional libraries (including the Moodle Framework) that are linked on its Workshop page. Pick one of the two trait mods for your server, not both, because both rework the trait system.

Realism and gameplay

7. Common Sense

Common Sense adds lots of logical details: open cans with scissors or a screwdriver, pry open doors, windows and vehicles with a crowbar, clip your flashlight to your belt. The original with about 3.5 million subscribers has not been updated since March 2025. For Build 42 there is a remake by a different author (Common Sense [B42.20+]). On multiplayer, its author writes that it "should work without issues" since update 3.6, so give it a quick test before using it on a large server. From 42.22, the game itself lets you pry things open with a crowbar.

8. Authentic Z

Authentic Z adds a huge number of outfits for zombies and players, plus backpacks and other items, which makes the world feel much more varied. It runs on Build 41 and Build 42 and has its own section for server owners on its Workshop page. Keep the size of almost 900 MB in mind: new players have to download it when they first connect.

9. Bandits NPC

Project Zomboid has no human enemies by default. Bandits NPC adds hostile groups: small groups with melee weapons at first, later larger ones with firearms. They attack, steal from your base, sabotage generators, vehicles or crops and break through doors and windows. It is Build 42 only (42.20 and later) and works in single player and multiplayer according to the author. With over 1 million subscribers it is the most popular NPC mod for Build 42. For multiplayer servers the author notes that the mod must be enabled in three places: the server's mod selection, the Mods tab and the Steam Workshop tab.

Vehicles and maps

10. KI5: '92 AM General M998

KI5 makes detailed vehicles with their own spare parts, armour and storage. The M998 military truck with trailer is one of the most popular, with about 3.3 million subscribers. According to its description, Build 41 and Build 42 are fully supported in single player and multiplayer. The M998 requires "that DAMN Library" (3171167894, mod ID damnlib).

11. Raven Creek B42

Raven Creek is a large additional city map. The Build 42 version is a port by a different author. Map mods also need an entry in the Map= line on your server, see the guide below. The Workshop page does not explicitly mark the map as multiplayer-ready, so test it with your community first.

Still playing on Build 41?

Build 41 lives on as the beta branch "legacy41". Build 41 saves cannot be moved to Build 42, so many communities are staying on it for now. These classics are still relevant for those servers:

  • Mod Options (2169435993): only needed on Build 41, Build 42 has mod options built in.
  • Brita's Weapon Pack (2200148440) and Arsenal(26) GunFighter (2297098490): the best-known weapon mods, both Build 41 only.
  • Expanded Helicopter Events (2458631365): replaces the single helicopter with many different events. We did not find a Build 42 version on the Workshop.
  • Bedford Falls (522891356): popular city map, tested in multiplayer according to its author, Build 41 only.
  • More Traits is no longer maintained. Use Evolving Traits World instead, which has its own legacy version for Build 41.

How to add mods to your server

Mods are added in the server's configuration file (<servername>.ini, servertest.ini by default). Three lines matter:

  • WorkshopItems= contains the Workshop IDs, the number in the address of the Workshop page. Separate several IDs with a semicolon.
  • Mods= contains the mod IDs. You usually find them at the bottom of the Workshop description. One Workshop page can contain several mod IDs, only add the ones you want to use.
  • Map= is only needed for map mods. The map's folder name goes before the default map Muldraugh, KY.

An example with Better Sorting, Has Been Read, KI5 including its library, and Raven Creek:

WorkshopItems=2313387159;2544353492;3171167894;2642541073;3484263516
Mods=BetterSortCC;P4HasBeenRead;damnlib;92amgeneralM998;RavenCreekB42
Map=Raven Creek B42;Muldraugh, KY

The server downloads the Workshop mods when it starts. Players get them automatically when they connect and do not need to subscribe themselves. A few practical tips:

  • Don't forget libraries: many mods depend on another mod. Add it to WorkshopItems= and Mods= and put it before the mods that need it in the Mods= line.
  • Check the format on Build 42: the format of the Mods= line changed with Build 42. If a mod does not load, select your mods once locally in the game under "Host" and "Manage Settings" and copy the line the game creates.
  • Back up before every change: some mods cannot be removed from a running save.
  • Test after updates: The Indie Stone points out that any mod can break with a game update. The new Pre-Release branch is meant to give server owners time to test their mods first.
  • Only use trusted mods: only Lua mods from the Workshop are officially supported. Java mods and external loaders change the game code directly and are not supported by the developers. All mods in this list are regular Workshop mods.

FAQ

Do Build 41 mods work on Build 42?

Usually not without changes. Many authors have released separate Build 42 versions, often with a new Workshop ID. Look for the "Build 42" tag or a note in the title on the Workshop.

Do my players have to subscribe to the mods themselves?

No. Everything listed in WorkshopItems= is downloaded automatically when players connect.

Can I add mods to a running server?

For many mods that works, for example Bandits NPC according to its author. Map mods only affect areas that have not been explored yet, and some mods should not be removed again. So always make a backup first.
