🐄🐑 Rust Livestock update: the key changes and what server owners should keep in mind for the wipe

Cows, sheep, the Biofuel Generator and new Powergrid loot rooms – here is what the October update brings to Rust.

On Thursday, 1 October 2026, Facepunch released the October update for Rust: Livestock. Its centerpiece is a farming overhaul – for the first time, you can keep, breed and sell livestock.

🔎 The key changes

  • Cows and sheep: cows give milk, sheep give wool, both produce dung – and like other animals they can be harvested for meat, bones and leather. Livestock has genes and needs and can be bred towards better traits.
  • Trading at the stables: sell grown animals and wool to a new vendor at the stables in exchange for randomized resource offers.
  • Biofuel Generator: finally a use for raw or spoiled meat – the generator turns organic matter into Low Grade Fuel. It does need to be stirred by hand roughly every 30 minutes.
  • Powergrid loot rooms: 13 monuments now have new locked loot rooms. They only open once enough Heavy Fuses have been inserted into the Power Plant.
  • Air Wolf helipad: at the start of a wipe, the helipad at Bandit Camp is broken. The vendor only sells air vehicles again once players have repaired it together.
  • Also new: fences and gates for your herd, stackable sandbags, new critters and sea creatures, plus new recipes based on milk and meat.

🛠️ What server owners should keep in mind

  • Update on your ZAP server: Your Rust server gets its files via Steam and is updated automatically. As soon as you log in to the web interface, you will see a notice that an update is available.
  • Force wipe: like every monthly Rust update on the first Thursday of the month, Livestock comes with a mandatory wipe – the map starts fresh, and old maps are not compatible with the new version.
  • Check your plugins: if you run plugins, make sure your framework (e.g. Oxide or Carbon) and your plugins are up to date after the update. Big updates often require new versions.
  • New settings: according to Facepunch, Heavy Fuses last four times longer on servers with 10 or fewer players and return to normal at 100 players or more. You can tune this with the convars powergrid.fusedecaylowpop, powergrid.fusedecayhighpop and powergrid.fusedecaylowpopscale. Helipad repairs are controlled via vehicle.padrepairsrequired and vehicle.setrepairablepads.
  • Save the date: according to Facepunch, a mandatory server and client update with Halloween content arrives on 22 October 2026 at 18:00 BST.
