Mining in the Nether: Guide to Finding Valuable Resources

If you think the Overworld has everything you need, you're not playing Minecraft to its full potential. Wait till you explore the Nether. Many might call it a hellish realm, which is partially true, but also a goldmine.

When you're ready to level up your game, the Nether is where you go. This is the only place to get Ancient Debris, the key to crafting Netherite gear, the most challenging stuff in Minecraft. It’s also packed with Quartz for XP and redstone builds, Glowstone for lighting, Blackstone for building, and Gold for bartering with Piglins.

But don’t let the loot fool you, this place is out to kill you. Lava flows faster, mobs hit harder, and if you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to end up respawning at your base without any of your stuff.

So, we have come up with this guide that will help you learn all the tips and tricks about mining in the Nether. You need to be prepared before entering this world. Let’s check out everything you need to know.

Preparing for Nether Mining

Before we swing our axe to mine in the Nether, you must prep like your life depends on it. This might sound a little too much, but wait until you enter this world. Here are a few things you must carry with you.

1. Armor

Well, it is recommended to have the complete Netherite armor, but that is impossible if this is your first visit to the Nether. So, the next best thing is Diamond. If you can get the Fire Protection enchantment on your armor, it would be better at protecting you from the lava flowing around everywhere.

If you're early-game and don't have full Diamond yet, at least get the Iron armor with decent enchantments, and bring Fire Resistance potions to compensate. But honestly, I wouldn’t recommend serious mining until you’ve got solid Diamond gear and the confidence to survive.

2. Weapons and Potions

Next, you need to check your inventory for the weapons you currently have. You will definitely need a Diamond pickaxe for mining, it's the bare minimum. Enchant it with Fortune if you're mining quartz or gold, or go with Silk Touch if you’re collecting blocks like Glowstone.

Moving on, for combat, you must have a Sword with the necessary enchantments, especially Looting, to have the best chance of getting loot. Likewise, you will also need a good ranged weapon such as a Bow and a Crossbow, which comes in handy when fighting Ghasts.

Next, there is only one potion that you will need in abundance, i.e., Fire Resistance. This will not only protect from the lava but also from the mobs such as Blazes. If you do not have enough right now, you can brew them in the Nether as well in abundance.

4. Blocks

Make sure to carry a lot of Cobblestone in the Nether. They are your first defense against sudden lava flows or to safely bridge across gaps. Furthermore, you can also use them to build a wall around your Nether portal that will keep it safe from mobs such as Ghasts, as they shoot fireballs and can destroy your ticket back home.

5. Food

Although pretty basic, you need to carry a lot of food. Also, ensure to have a good number of Golden Apples, since they can help to restore health quickly, especially during combat. You will come across a lot of dangerous mobs in the Nether, and you need to be prepared for them.

Mining All The Valuable Resources

Hoping that you have gathered all the necessary items you will need in the Nether. All you have to do is build a portal and get on with it. Now, let’s talk about all the resources you can mine here and the places you can find them.

You might have already gone through a ton of videos about mining in Nether, and they all talk about one single thing: Netherite. Well, they are kind of misleading since you cannot directly mine Netherite. In fact, Nether has so much more to offer than one single resource. Let’s talk about each of them below.

1. Ancient Debris (Most Important Resource)

This is the big one, the only way to upgrade your gear to Netherite. But here’s the catch: you’re not “mining Netherite”, you're mining Ancient Debris, smelting it into Netherite Scrap, and then combining it with gold.

There are no shortcuts here, you have to go through the entire process. It is surely rare, and you have to grind your way through to get a Netherite armor. Now, the real question is where to look for this resource?

Ancient Debris spawns in the lower Nether, specifically between Y-levels 8 to 22, with the sweet spot at Y=15. You won’t find this block just by walking into a cave, you have to mine it to get it. The best biomes to look for these are the Warped Forest and the Nether Wastes biome. Here are a few mining methods that work the best.

1. Bed Mining

The best method in budget and resources, yet the most chaotic, is using a Bed. Since beds explode when you try to sleep in the Nether, they double as a poor man's TNT.

Well, you will need a few things before trying out this method. Firstly, and obviously, there will be a lot of beds, Cobblestones, and Fire Resistance Potions (as many as you can). Then, select any biome of your choice for mining (start with Warped Forest), and dig down to Y=14 or 15.

Now, you need to activate Chunk Borders by pressing F3 + G on the Java version of the game. Then, keep mining till you find the Chunk border that looks like a horizontal line right in front of you. We are using Chunk Borders since most of the Ancient Debris is found near these lines. Dig a short tunnel (about 6 blocks) along the chunk border. At the end, you can place a bed. Now, head back and dig down two blocks and place a Cobblestone slab beneath you. This will protect you a great deal from the blast. From here, try “sleeping” on the bed. And it will explode. Keep repeating the same process. You can use Fire Resistant Potion to keep you from burning, and even eat cooked pork chops to regain health if need be.

2. TNT Mining

This might be yet another explosive way to mine Ancient Debris, but crafting TNT is the most expensive thing ever, and hence, many players do not opt for this method. But it is still worth it.

Now, if you use this method correctly, you might get about 70-80 Ancient Debris per hour. Insane right? Well, if you watch YouTube tutorials, they might simply ask you to lay down a single TNT every four blocks apart, which isn’t the worst idea. This will still give you a good number of resources.

However, to make the best out of TNTs, start by digging a tunnel of at least 100 blocks in any direction. Make sure you are at Y-Level 14 or 15. You can dig even further than 100 blocks, whichever is easier.

Now, place two TNTs together and skip a block, then two TNTs together and skip. Repeat the same with every last piece you have left. Then, create a tunnel in the opposite direction as well for you to be as far away from the explosion as you can. Once done, light up the TNT and run away.

Wait for the explosion to be over, and you have this massive area filled with resources. Drink the Fire Resistant Potion and keep exploring the area to collect Ancient Debris.

3. Chunk Border Mining

This is yet another highly efficient method to get Ancient Debris, even some players might say this is the fastest method ever. We have already spoken about how to activate the Chunk border and how they are useful in mining the resources.

Now, you can use Beds and TNTs for explosions along these chunk lines. However, the more efficient method is to simply do it your way.

This will require you to have a Netherite Pickaxe with Efficiency IV or V, Unbreaking III, and Mending as well. Along with this, make sure to carry Fire-Resistant Potions with you to protect yourself from the lava.

Then, activate Chunk border by pressing F3 + G on your keyboard. Use your pickaxe and start digging. You will get tons of Ancient Debris along the way that you can collect, along with gold, too. The only issue with this method is that it takes up a lot of your pickaxe durability. But, if you have the right enchantments with you, it should do the job.

What Do You Need This For?

The real power and usage of Ancient Debris is by crafting it into Netherite. First, you need to craft Netherite Scrap by throwing Ancient Debris into the furnace. Then, once you have 4 Netherite Scraps and 4 Gold Ingots, combine them in a crafting table. That gets you 1 Netherite Ingot.

This Netherite is then used for multiple purposes. For example, one Netherite Ingot + Chiseled Stone Bricks gives you Lodestone (used to anchor compasses in specific dimensions). Then, you can upgrade all your armor and weapons to Netherite, making them highly durable and even immune to lava.

2. Nether Quartz

The next resource in our list is Nether Quartz. They are mainly found in the Nether Wastes biome along the Y-level. Mining these isn’t that difficult; in fact, they are pretty easy to find around the Nether.

You can simply use your best Pickaxe with Fortune III enchantment for gathering as many crystals as you can, and you are good to go. Moving on, let’s talk about why you even need this resource.

What Do You Need This For?

The first thing that you can use these Quartz in is for Redstone structures and builds. You can use them to craft Comparators, Observers, and Daylight Sensors. Basically, the smart, brainy stuff in your Redstone contraptions needs Quartz. No Quartz, no automation.

Then, you can use this to craft the cleanest and most polished block types in the game. For example, using 4 Nether Quartz gives you a basic solid white block. If you smelt a block of Quartz in a furnace, it gives a polished and clean version with white edges, etc. All these are excellent sources to make your base or other structures look aesthetically brilliant.

Lastly, this resource gives a huge chunk of XP, more than most of the other ores in the game. It can then be used for leveling up your enchantments and repairing Mending gear.

3. Nether Gold Ore

This is truly an underappreciated ore in the game. But they are very useful once you know how to make the best use of them. They are found everywhere in the Nether, most commonly in Nether Wastes and Crimson Forest.

Nether Gold Ore has the advantage over Overworld Gold Ore as it can be mined faster, even with a basic pickaxe. Now, the trick here is to use Silk Touch enchantment on your pickaxe, which will give you the entire block of Nether Gold Ore instead of the nuggets. You can then smelt the ore in a furnace and get 1 Gold Ingot per block.

What Do You Need This For?

The gold ingots can be used to barter with Piglin and collect some loot such as Ender Pearls (great for locating Strongholds), Obsidian, Crying Obsidian, Fire Resistance Potions, Gravel, Quartz, Soul Speed books, and more.

But be careful and never mine the Nether Gold Ore near a Piglin since they might start attacking you. Other than this, you can use it for crafting Golden Apples, Powered Rails, etc.

4. Glowstone

You might have come across a cluster of glowing blocks on the ceiling as soon as you enter the Nether dimension; well, that is Glowstone. It’s one of the most useful light sources in the game and also one of the sketchiest to mine, thanks to its usual “I’m floating above death” placement.

They are found everywhere in the Nether, mostly in the Nether Wastes. It is generally difficult to mine and collect them if you do it wrong. These are mostly above lava pools, and once you break them, they drop 2–4 Glowstone Dust.

To mine them efficiently, try using Silk Touch, which will instantly give you the entire block. Or you can build a platform beneath these blocks and then use any tool to mine them and collect the dust likewise.

What Do You Need This For?

Mostly, this is used for lighting your base or any other structure you might build. Since it is the brightest light in the game, you can use it instead of torches. Other than this, it can be used as a power conductor in Redstone builds and can even transmit Redstone signals upward (which most solid blocks can’t). Furthermore, you can use Glowstone in brewing potions, which enhances them and makes the potions stronger, but only for a short duration.

5. Blackstone

This is the resource that isn’t given much importance anywhere, but they are incredibly useful, at least to us. You can find them everywhere in the Basalt Deltas biome. Not only are they pretty black in color, but they are also one of the few blocks in Minecraft that can be used as a substitute for Cobblestone, making it quite useful in the Nether.

You can use them to build some amazing and aesthetically pleasing structures, craft Chiseled & Gilded Blackstone, and do so much more.

To mine them, you can use any tool you have at your disposal. Since they are available pretty easily, this should not be a difficult job. You will only need a Fire Resistant Potion for obvious reasons, and stay clear of any mobs.

Mining Tips Before You Go

Before you get started with mining, let’s take a step back and check out some mining tips to remember. These are for every other resource you will find there.

  1. Fire Protection is your holy grail. Bring it with you from the overworld as many as you can. And craft in the Nether too as many as possible.
  1. Make sure you have the right pickaxe when mining for Ancient Debris. You will need a Diamond or a Netherite Pickaxe with proper enchantments to grab the most.
  1. Prepare a wool farm and a Gunpowder farm to craft beds and TNTs. They will come in handy when mining some difficult-to-get resources.
  1. Watch out for Lava everywhere. Whether you are exploring the ground beneath or simply going for explosions. You never know when they might come out of nowhere.
  1. Be ready with your inventory when entering the Nether. If this is your first time here, get the best gear, tools, and weapons. Carry cobblestone for shielding and food (you will need a lot of it).

And that is all you will have in the Nether. In paper, this might look like nothing, but once you start exploring, you will never get bored with it.
