All Passive Mobs in Minecraft- Everything You Need To Know

You might have encountered several mobs if you have spent years playing the game or just started. From the first time you nervously approached a wandering cow, unsure if it would bite (it didn’t) to the moment you locked eyes with an Enderman and immediately regretted it, each mob adds a unique experience.

Some are peaceful companions, grazing in the fields or swimming in rivers. Others mind their own business—until you give them a reason to fight. And then there are the true nightmares, the bosses that test your patience, skill, and sometimes even your willingness to reload a saved file.

This guide is all about the Passive mobs in Minecraft. If you are new here, you are in for a ride. So stay put, and let’s check out everything you need to know about different mobs in the game.

These mobs pose no threat to you, even if you provoke them for no reason. Most serve a purpose, whether providing food, materials, transportation, or simply adding life to the world. Many of these mobs can be bred, making them essential for farming resources and survival.

Here is a detailed list below.

1. Cow

Cows are completely harmless, but they are the most essential farm animal in the game. They are a staple in any survival world due to their easy breeding mechanics and valuable drops such as leather, beef, and milk.

You can find them in Plains, Forests, Sunflower Plains, and Meadow Biomes. If killed, you can collect 1-3 Raw Beef or Steak (if killed with fire), 0-2 Leather (for books, armor, etc), and milk.

They can also be bred by feeding them wheat, and it takes about 20 minutes to create baby cows. Cows basically act as an infinite source of food and the most easy-to-bred animal. Furthermore, you can also find Mushroom Cows (Mooshrooms), a rare variant found in Mushroom Fields which we will be learning more about soon.

2. Sheep

Another very important farm animal, primarily known for their wool production. You will need a lot of wool to craft your bed, banners, and other resources in the game.

Like cows, they are also found in plains, forests, sunflower plains, and meadow Biomes. As mentioned above, sheep drop raw mutton, which can then be cooked in a furnace and give you Cooked Mutton, which restores 6 hunger points. This serves as an excellent food source.

Similarly, you can breed them on a farm by feeding wheat to two sheep. They can regrow wool after eating grass, making sheep farms super easy to maintain throughout. Another interesting fact about this mob is that Sheep can be dyed with any color, making them useful for pixel art & colorful builds.

3. Chicken

Next up, we have Chicken. They are easy to breed, drop essential resources like Feathers, Eggs, and Raw Chicken, and don’t require much effort to farm. They spawn in biomes such as Plains, Forests, Sunflower Plains, Jungles, Swamps, Sparse Jungles, and Meadow Biomes.

Chicken lay eggs every 5-10 minutes, which can be used to hatch more chickens and grow your farm, make cake and pumpkin pie. They also drop feathers which is essential to craft arrows, books, and quills.

As mentioned, you get raw chicken as a food source, and when cooked, the cooked chicken restores six hunger points. There are other chicken variants in the game, such as Chicken Jockey.

4. Pigs

Pigs are also a great food source, but not as important as the other animals. They only draw around 1-3 raw pork chops; if cooked using fire, the cooked Porkchops can restore eight hunger points.

You can breed the pigs using Carrots, Potatoes, or Beetroot. They can also be ridden by using a saddle and a carrot on a stick. However, they are not the best means of transport, but overall, it's fun.

Fact: Zombified Piglins come from pigs struck by lightning (in Bedrock Edition).

5. Horse

Horses in Minecraft are fairly known for fast travel, jumping high obstacles, and easy exploration. Unlike Pigs, which require a Carrot on a Stick, Horses can be controlled freely once tamed.

They do drop leather when killed, but it's generally not required since you will get enough from cows. So, it's best used for riding and exploring biomes. They are considered the fastest in the game and can reach up to 14 blocks/sec.

Seven base-colored horses are available with multiple markings, such as Plain, Whitefield, etc., giving you 35 combinations. You might also come across Skeleton Horses that spawn only during lightning storms & don’t need Saddles.

6. Rabbit

Rabbits are a pretty rare find in the game, and most are found in Deserts, Snowy Plains, Snowy Slopes, Snowy Taiga, Meadow, Cherry Grove, and Flower Forest. They are found in multiple colors: White, Brown, Black, Gray, Beige, and Sandy.

Some of the drops or loots you can collect from rabbits are Rabbit Hides to craft leather, raw rabbits or cooked rabbits (if killed by fire), and rabbits' feet to make Potion of Leaping that allows higher jumps.

They are a good source of leather crafting if you are unable to find cows in the early game. The best part of Rabbits is that you can use the meat to craft Rabbit Stew, which restores 10 hunger points, one of the best food sources in the game.

7. Axolotl

They are one of the cutest mobs in Minecraft and are only found in lush caves. There are certain spawn conditions where you will find these, i.e., they spawn in natural clay pools within Lush Caves, and they must be in total darkness (light level = 0).

You will find different types of Axolotl in the game, including Leucistic (Pink), Wild (Brown), Gold (Yellow), Cyan (Light Blue), and Blue, which is super rare.

Now, these mobs do not have any drops or loot to offer; hence, they are not used much in the game. You can pick them up with a water bucket and transport them anywhere, making it easier to put them in an aquarium.

8. Cats

Cats are one of our favorite creatures in Minecraft. Not only are they passive mobs, but they are tamable too, so you can capture and keep them as your lovable pet. Once tamed, a cat will follow you everywhere, sleep beside you, and even bring you gifts in the morning!

While they spawn mostly in the Villages, they only drop 0-2 Strings when killed. However, it is not really recommended since they are best to be tamed and used as pets.

Once you have tamed the cats, you can use them as a defense for your base because Creepers and Phantoms are scared of them, and they mostly keep away. Furthermore, cats bring you gifts in the morning, such as Rabbit Foot, Rabbit Hide, String, Feathers, Rotten Flesh, Raw Chicken, Phantom Membrane, etc.

You might come across 11 variants of cats, such as Tabby, Tuxedo, Siamese, Calico, and many others. Make sure you are calm and patient when trying to tame a cat since they often run away from sudden movements just like a regular cat would.

9. Fox

Well, Fox is an incredibly fast and mischievous passive mob that you will encounter in Taiga Biomes. White foxes only spawn in Snowy Taiga biomes; they sleep during the day and become active at night.

One of the most interesting facts about Foxes is that they carry or hold items in their mouth. You might find a lot of foxes wandering about, having different items in their mouth, either a weapon or any food item.

If foxes are holding any weapon, they use it in attacks. Hence, they are pretty good in combat if you have one as a pet. Foxes also prey on other mobs such as Chicken, Rabbits, Cod & Salmon (if near water), Tropical Fish, and Glow Squids. They do not eat them but rather kill them for sport. Foxes use their jumping ability to catch the prey even when the mobs are in a cage, which is pretty unique.

The only thing that foxes are scared of and are hunted by is the wolf. Although it is not easy to catch a fox since they are pretty fast, you will find them running away from wolves in the biome.

10. Ocelots

Ocelots are a unique set of passive mobs that are not to be tamed but follow you around if given food. They are fast, skittish, and excellent Creeper deterrents, making them useful for jungle explorers.

These mobs spawn in Jungle Biomes, Sparse Jungle, and Bamboo Jungle. Ocelots are very shy creatures; hence, you should approach them with caution, as they will most probably run away from you.

To gain their trust, hold a raw cod or raw salmon in your hand. Sneak or crouch and approach them carefully. Wait for the mob to approach you and feed them the food. Repeat this multiple times, and after that, they will trust you.

Being among the fastest mobs in the game, they can outrun most of the mobs. Also, the best part of these mobs is that Creepers & Phantoms are scared of them; hence, keep at least one Ocelot with you to keep the mobs away.

11. Parrot

Parrots are the rarest mobs in the game, so if you find one, tame it immediately. They are mostly found in the Jungle Biomes, Sparse Jungle, and Bamboo Jungle. Parrots are known for their vibrant colors, ability to mimic hostile mob sounds, and perching on players' shoulders.

You can find five colored parrots in the game: Red, Blue, Green, Cyan, and Gray. They are meant to be killed since they drop nothing and are rare.

Hold any type of seeds in your hand and try feeding the parrot to tame them. Hearts will appear when tamed, and it will follow you!

You can keep them in your base since they can easily mimic the sounds of nearby mobs such as Creeper, Zombie, Skeleton, or other enemies, making them excellent early-warning pets for spotting danger!

Parrots can dance, too, adding fun and aesthetics to the game. Also, don’t ever feed cookies to them, as they get killed immediately.

12. Allay

This is a pretty unique passive mob in the game that acts as a flying item collector. Allay is small in size and looks like a blue-colored fairy-like creature that picks up dropped items and brings them to the player.

You can find them at Pillager Outposts and Woodland Mansions. They are basically prisoners locked in cages around these areas. You will have to free them by breaking their cage or door.

Allays are pretty useful when you want to collect any items in the game. Start by holding any item and give it to them. The Allay will search for copies of that item nearby (within a 32-block radius). It will pick up matching items and bring them back to you.

Likewise, you can use a NoteBlock to collect items from the Allay. If an active Note Block is nearby, the Allay will deliver items to it instead of the player. The Allay will stay linked to that Note Block for 30 seconds after it last plays.

13. Frog and Tadpole

Frogs spawn in Swamps and Mangrove Swamps in groups of 2-5 near water. There are three variants of this mob, namely the Temperate Frog (Orange), which spawns naturally in Swamps; the Warm Frog (white), which spawns naturally in the Mangrove Swamps; and lastly, we have the Cold Frog, found in the Snowy Biomes.

The unique aspect of this mob is that even though they drop nothing when killed if they eat a Small Magma Cube, they produce a Froglight (unique light source), the best decorative light source in the game!

Frogs can jump about 8 blocks high, making them one of the highest-jumping mobs in the game. You can breed them, too, by feeding them Slimeballs and create a farm full of frogs.

Similarly, Tadpoles are passive baby mobs that grow into Frogs. You won’t find them anywhere naturally spawning in the game; instead, they hatch from Frogspawn, which is laid by Frogs after breeding.

Tadpoles can survive in water and not on land. To transfer them to a different biome, you can use a Water Bucket and carry them with you.

14. Bat

If you are looking for Bats, check out the Dark Caves in the game. Unlike other passive mobs, Bats do not provide any drops, cannot be tamed, and have no practical use. However, they help make caves feel more immersive and lively as they flutter around and make squeaky noises in the darkness.

Many argue that Bats should be removed from the game entirely since they do not serve any purpose at all. However, we find it useful, considering they help locate these caves and add the ambiance.

15. Cod, Salmon, and Tropical Fish

There are three types of fish mobs in the game: Cod, Salmon, and Tropical Fish. Cod serves as a food source for players and aquatic mobs like Axolotls. You can find them in Oceans (all variants except Frozen Oceans and Deep Frozen Oceans) and Rivers.

Cods can be caught using a Fishing Rod in any water body. This way, there is a huge chance of catching raw cod. You can also use a water bucket to catch the cods, perfect for making custom fish tanks or aquariums.

By eating raw cod, you can restore 2 hunger points; while eating Cooked Cod, you can restore 5 hunger points. They can also be used to tame and breed cats.

Similarly, Salmons can also be used as a food source. They drop raw Salmon, cooked salmon, Bones, and Bone Meal.

Furthermore, we have another aquatic mob, namely Tropical Fish. There are around 2700 different types of such fish in the water, each with unique colors and patterns. Since they are colorful and diverse, Tropical Fish are great for aquariums. Unlike Salmon and Cod, Tropical Fish cannot be cooked. They are mainly decorative or used for feeding Axolotls.

16. Donkey

Similar to horses, donkeys can be tamed and used to ride around the Minecraft world. They spawn in Plains and Savanna Biomes but are much rarer than Horses, so it's recommended not to kill them.

Apart from being used for riding along, it is a great source of carrying goods and chests and can store up to 15 slots of items. Furthermore, if you kill them, they drop Leather, Saddle, and Chests (if attached). Unlike Horses, Donkeys always have the same speed and jump height.

17. Mule

The next one, we have Mule, a hybrid between Horses and Donkeys. They combine the speed and jump ability of Horses with the storage capacity of Donkeys, making them one of the most useful rideable animals in the game.

While Horses are great for riding long distances, Donkeys are good for carrying chests. However, mules are the best of both worlds, making them perfect for both activities. But they do not spawn naturally in the world. Instead, breeding a Donkey and a Horse together is the only way to obtain a Mule.

For breeding, first, you need to capture both the Horse and Donkey and tame them. Once ready, feed them a Golden Carrot or a Golden Apple to trigger breeding. Once fed, the Horse and Donkey will enter "Love Mode," and a Baby Mule will be born.

18. Glow Squids

They spawn in underground water caves, the Lush Caves biome, and deep ocean biomes. Glow Squids emit a beautiful glow underwater, and unlike regular squids, they do not shoot ink when attacked.

These aquatic mobs drop Glow Ink Sac, which can be used to make glowing texts on signboards and create Glowing Item Frames. These can be used for aesthetic effects or to highlight important signs in dark caves.

19. Mooshroom

Mooshroom are rare compared to others in the game. You can find them only in the Mushroom Islands, which are also the rarest biomes in Minecraft. They are similar to cows but covered in mushrooms instead of regular fur.

There are two variants, Red and Brown. Red Mooshroom is the default variant that spawns on the island. While the brown ones only spawn when a Mooshroom is struck by lightning. Although it is not recommended to kill them; however, they drop Leather, Raw Beef, and Mushrooms.

Note: If you shear a Mooshroom, it transforms into a regular cow and permanently loses its mushrooms.

Take these Mooshroom to your base for an infinite stew and also because they are super rare. You can use wheat to breed them and create a farm for more Mooshrooms.

20. Pufferfish

Pufferfish being a passive mob might be a bit controversial, in my opinion, since they do have some defensive capabilities. They spawn in the Oceans as individuals or in small groups.

They have this unique self-defense mechanism. You might find them swimming in the ocean when they find no threat nearby. However, if a player or mob comes within 3 blocks, the Pufferfish expands slightly. Furthermore, if you get very close to them, the Pufferfish inflates completely and poisons the attacker for 7 seconds.

A few items that they drop are Pufferfish raw and XP Orbs. They cannot be cooked and are mostly used for potion brewing.

21. Snow Golem

These passive do not serve any such purpose in the game. Snow Golem are friendly snow creatures that throw snowballs at hostile mobs and leave a snow trail in cold biomes, making them useful for farming snow.

Unlike most mobs, Snow Golems do not spawn naturally—players must build them, just like in real life, only these come alive after they are built. They also have a few combat properties, such as attacking hostile mobs by throwing snowballs at them. Although they deal with no damage, they can still be a distraction.

22. Squid

Sqiuds are aquatic mobs that spawn in Rivers, Oceans (all types), and Lakes in swamps. They, too, have a defense mechanism where they simply release a cloud of black ink and try to swim away quickly when attacked.

Squids drop ink sacks, which can be turned into Black Dye. These are further used to color items such as wool, beds, glass, banners, etc.

23. Strider

We have a Nether world passive mob that walks on lava. They are the only rideable mob in the Nether, making them the best way to travel safely across lava lakes. If killed, they drop String, which is further used to craft leads, bows, and fishing rods.

You can ride a Strider using a saddle and control it with a Warped Fungus on a Stick. This mob has a few strengths and weaknesses. They are entirely immune to lava and do not take damage from it. Squids would never attack players or other mobs.

However, they become slow when out of lava (turn blue and shiver). They even take damage from rainwater; hence, it is advisable to keep them under cover to protect them from rain.

24. Turtle

The last one on our list of all the passive mobs is Turle. They are unique because they lay eggs and can be bred to produce Scute, which is essential for crafting a Turtle Shell Helmet.

Turtles spawn in a group of 2-6 at the Beaches (except Snowy & Stony Beaches). To collect Scute, you can breed two turtles and wait for the baby Turtles to grow. This is a much better option than killing these mobs.

We also have other mobs, such as the Wandering Trader, which roams around the game and offers rare and exotic items in exchange for Emeralds. The name has been given as wandering since they do not have a fixed home and simply roam around.

And that is all the passive mobs you will have in the game. However, if you feel we have missed out on anything, let us know in the comment section.
