Players have a love-and-hate connection when it comes to using Enchantments in Minecraft. While these are a godsend and make the game very interesting, enchantments sometimes feel like an overpowering force, such as undermining the game's difficulty and making it less rewarding.
Nevertheless, for us, it has been a constant companion. Not only has it helped in fighting fierce battles, but it also helped in breathing underwater (Thanks, Respiration). There is so much more to these enchantments and what meets the eye.

So, we have created this guide with a list of every enchantment you can find in the game and what they are used for.
Let’s get on with it.
These are some of the most impactful upgrades you can apply to your armor. They can save you from deadly mobs, make exploring lava-filled caves safer, and even reduce fall damage (if you are clumsy like me). Let’s look at all the enchantments available in the game and how they can be used.
Mending is your holy grail and one of the most important enchantments you will need in the game. Not only is it used in armor but also in other tools and weapons.
It uses XP orbs you collect to repair the durability of your equipped or held enchanted item. Instead of adding the XP to your experience bar, the orbs are redirected to restore your gear, keeping it in top condition.
This tool will make your gears and weapons invincible if you have gathered enough XP over time. Since this is a highly valuable enchantment in the game, acquiring it is even more difficult.
Mending cannot be obtained through a standard enchantment table. You can collect it using three methods. Firstly through an Enchantment Book that can be found in dungeons, mineshafts, bastions, strongholds, or end cities. Secondly, try villages, which is seemingly much easier. Librarians often offer Mending books as part of their trades, but finding one with the enchantment may take some effort.
Furthermore, it is important to notice that Mending in itself can be a bit challenging to maintain especially if you have it on all your gears. This enchantment prioritizes repairing over adding to your XP bar, so you may find yourself leveling up more slowly if all your gear has Mending.
This is our personal favorite and deserves a special mention. Feather Falling basically reduces the damage you take when you fall from a height.
I have a history of falling from cliffs or heights much more than an average player, and this enchantment has been a lifesaver a million times. With this enchantment, you can obtain a max Level IV that cuts fall damage by up to 48%, giving you a much better chance of survival from extreme heights.
You can obtain the Feather Falling enchantment directly through the Enchanting Table. Or you can trade it with other villagers, which is much more reliable and more probable than other methods. If you cannot get it using the above method, you can occasionally find it in generated structures like dungeons, temples, and bastions.
Furthermore, to level up the enchantment, you can combine lower-level Feather Falling books (e.g., two Feather Falling II books) on an anvil to create a higher-level version.
Next, in our top three, we have the Protection enchantment. It is one of the game's most versatile and essential enchantments, providing increased damage reduction from various sources.
This applies to most types of damage, such as fire, fall damage, projectile, etc. Protection’s damage reduction stacks with the base armor value of your equipped gear, making it incredibly powerful when paired with strong materials like Diamond or Netherite.
This enchantment has four levels; the higher the level, the higher the percentage of damage protection. The best part here is that you can apply it to your helmet, chest plate, leggings, and boots.
Similarly, you will find different types of enchantments in the same category, i.e., Blast Protection (specialized against explosions), Fire Protection (specialized against fire and lava damage), and Projectile Protection (specialized against arrows, tridents, and other projectiles).
Ensure you have a complete set of protection armor with Protection IV, which provides maximum damage reduction. For example, you can obtain a full set of Netherite Armor with Level IV Protection on each armor, providing near-immunity to most damage types, making you incredibly tough to kill.
This is yet another enchantment that isn’t only necessary for your armor but all tools and weapons. Its primary function is to increase the durability of the item it’s applied to, making it last much longer before breaking.
This enchantment is a favorite among players who rely on heavily used items, such as pickaxes, swords, or Elytra. Collectively speaking, the item can last up to 4 times longer with Unbreaking III compared to an item with no enchantment.
Furthermore, Unbreaking works perfectly well with Mending, Efficiency, Protection, etc. It is also important to note here that your armor doesn't become invincible with enchantment; it will still lose durability but at a significantly slower rate.
Aqua Affinity is a pretty simple enchantment but a must-have for your armor. It removes the mining speed penalty caused by being underwater. In general, mining underwater is five times slower than on land, and if you're not standing on a solid block, it’s even worse (25 times slower).
However, with this enchantment, you can mine underwater at a normal speed that you would do on land. Aqua Affinity works only while you are underwater and can only be applied to all types of Helmets, such as Leather, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite.
You can also use the Respiration enchantment along with this to increase your breathing time underwater, making water exploration a lot easier.
As mentioned above, Respiration increases the time you can breathe underwater before running out of air. This is perfect if you are like exploring the different parts of the game underwater.
You can also upgrade this enchantment to Level III, giving you around 45 extra seconds underwater. Additionally, each level of Respiration slightly increases the chance of automatically regenerating oxygen bubbles when underwater.
Similarly, Respiration can only be applied to all kinds of Helmets available in the game, including leather, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite.
This is more of a defensive enchantment that inflicts damage on others when they hit you. The damage dealt is independent of the attacker’s strength and can affect mobs, players, or any entity capable of dealing melee or projectile damage.
This has three upgrade levels, with Level III causing the most damage to mobs and other players who attack you. While this enchantment is helpful in combats by mobs using melee weapons, it may not be very useful if you are into ranged combats.
This is yet another personal favorite. Frost Walker creates frosted ice blocks beneath your feet as you walk over water. These blocks are temporary and will melt after a few seconds, returning to water.
It is perfect for anyone who hates swimming across lakes and other water bodies; also, it looks pretty amazing. Likewise, this enchantment prevents damage from walking on magma blocks.
Frost Walker can be upgraded to Level II, which Expands the radius to 3 blocks, making it easier to cover wider areas. This enchantment can be applied only to your boots.
Depth Strider simply helps you swim faster underwater. Basically, you are Aquaman while swimming in the depths of the ocean. It works only when your boots, enchanted with Depth Strider, are submerged in water (not on the surface or land).
With higher levels of this enchantment, you can swim at speeds closer to your walking speed on land. Furthermore, you can pair it with other underwater enchantments we discussed earlier, such as Aqua Affinity and Respiration.
The name speaks for itself: Soul Speed allows players to move faster on soul sand and soul soil, blocks commonly found in the Nether.
Unlike other enchantments, you cannot get this in the overworld. You need to visit the Nether world and barter with Piglins. Simply offer gold ingots to piglins in the Nether. They may or may not drop enchanted books or boots with Soul Speed. Hence, this process can be time-consuming.
Another way you can acquire Soul Speed enchantment is through loot chests found in bastion remnants. Here, Soul Speed comes with three upgrades where Level III will give the maximum speed, making it faster than sprinting on normal blocks.
Each time you walk on Soul Sand or Soul Soil with Soul Speed boots, it consumes a small amount of the boots’ durability. So, you can apply the Unbreaking along with Mending enchantment to prolong the boots’ lifespan. Furthermore, removing the enchanted boots while walking on normal blocks is best to conserve durability.
Lastly, in the list of all the enchantments available for the armor, we have Swift Sneak. This enchantment increases your movement speed while sneaking. With Level I, the speed increases to about 15% more than usual, Level II about 45% more, and Level III around 75% more than normal sneaking speed.
Swift Sneak is exclusively found in Ancient Cities of the Deep Dark biome. You can look for chests around to get the enchanted books with Swift Sneak and make sure to stay clear of the warden.
This enchantment can only be applied to leggings and no other armor. Swift Sneak is extremely helpful in avoiding sculk sensors and Wardens in the Deep Dark and carefully maneuvering tight or dangerous spaces.
Let’s take in all the weapon enchantments and learn everything about them. These will help you in combats and even chop down trees faster.
As the enchantment's name speaks for itself, Sharpness makes your melee weapons or, better say, Swords sharper. It applies extra damage on top of the base weapon damage and is calculated using a combination of flat and scaled bonuses.
For the most benefit, you must upgrade to the maximum level for this enchantment. You can use it for PVP fights against bosses like the Ender Dragon or the Wither to maximize damage, and this also helps clear mobs faster in grinders or farms, saving time and effort.
This might be unpopular among the players, but Smite Level V is exceptionally strong. This enchantment increases your melee weapon's damage against undead mobs. If you are always unlucky and often encounter undead mobs such as Skeletons, Zombies, etc., this might come in handy.
Smite can be enchanted to Level V, which adds 10 extra damage to undead mobs. This means even high-health mobs like the Wither can be taken down faster with this enchantment.
It can be applied to Swords, Axes, and Mace, perfect for close encounters. Well, it works similarly to Sharpness. However, the difference here is that Smite only works in tackling undead mobs but is useless against other enemy types, while Sharpness is pretty versatile.
This specialized enchantment enhances your weapon’s damage against arthropod mobs. It applies a special effect called Slowness, temporarily reducing their movement speed. The additional damage grows with each enchantment level, making it a strong choice for targeted combat.
Bane of Arthropods only works on creatures, including Spiders, Cave Spiders, Silverfish, Endermites, and Bees. It can be enchanted to a Level V (max) that deals 10 extra damage to arthropods in addition to the weapon’s base damage.
However, it isn’t very popular among the players since they find it too specialized, especially compared to more versatile enchantments like Sharpness.
Knockback is a fun enchantment to work with. It increases the knockback force of your melee attacks. When you hit your enemies, they are flung backward at a much more distance than usual.
With Knockback Level II (max), enemies are pushed back 6 extra blocks. This may not be effective in defeating the enemy instantly, but it gives you enough time to settle, especially if a hoard of mobs attacks you.
It's best to combine this enchantment with others, such as Sharpness, Unbreaking, and Mending, for maximum effect.
Fire Aspect is also among my favorites. This allows your sword to burn up the mobs or players on contact. It adds burn damage over time, making it especially effective against mobs with lower health or when you want to soften up a brutal enemy.
Not only this, but many players, including me, use this enchantment to get cooked food. Animals like cows, pigs, and chickens drop cooked meat when killed with a Fire Aspect-enchanted sword.
With Level II(max), it burns mobs for 8 seconds, dealing 2 damage per second. Additionally, the burning effect can light up dark areas, making it easier to track enemies at night. However, it does not work against mobs or players submerged in water or during rain.
Looting is your holy grail of all enchantments. It enhances mob drops by increasing their quantity and the chance of rare items appearing. This comes in handy, making it a go-to enchantment for farming rare items and valuable resources.
This enchantment has three Levels. Level I increases the drop count by up to +1 extra item, Level II up to +2 extra items per drop, and Level III up to +3 extra items per drop. If you have been into farming some rare items such as Ender Pearls, Looting will save you time and effort all the way.
Make sure you have enough storage capacity to carry the extra loot using this enchantment, and patience is the key here since it doesn’t guarantee rare drops but surely increases the chances.
Another very important enchantment in the game that might be difficult for some to acquire. It boosts the speed of your tool, allowing you to mine or break blocks faster. It works on specific tools and becomes increasingly powerful at higher levels.
Level V(max) enables near-instant block breaking with compatible tools and setups. You can apply this enchantment to Pickaxes, Axes, Shovels, Hoes, and Shears (in Bedrock Edition). This might be useful in clearing large areas quicker; it can also decrease your tool’s durability unless you are also using Unbreaking and Mending enchantment.
Impaling is a special enchantment that can only be applied to Tridents. It increases the damage to aquatic mobs when you hit them with a trident.
As mentioned, this only works on aquatic mobs and does not affect those found on land or anywhere other than water. The Level V upgrade deals 5 extra damage to aquatic mobs, making it the most potent level of this enchantment.
Since the entire usage is limited to water bodies, this may not be as useful as other enchantments. Also, they only work with Tridents, which is very limiting.
This enchantment has recently been introduced in the game with the 1.21 update specifically designed for the mace weapon. It reduces the effectiveness of a target's armor, allowing your attacks to deal more damage.
With Level IV(max), Breach adds an additional 15% reduction in armor effectiveness. It’s particularly useful for taking down enemies with high armor ratings, like bosses or players with enchanted armor.
This can be found similar to all other enchantments from chests or traded with villagers. It is important to note that Breach is incompatible with every other enchantment. It cannot be combined with enchantments like Smite, Bane of Arthropods, or Density.
Density enchantment interacts with the player's fall damage and the strength of their weaponry. It allows players to deal increased damage based on their fall distance. Essentially, the longer you fall before landing a hit, the more damage you’ll deal with your weapon that’s enchanted with Density.
This enchantment can only be applied to Mace, a new weapon added to the 1.21+ update on Minecraft.
The Density enchantment adds 0.5 damage points per block of fall distance at its base level. This means the damage increases incrementally based on how far you fall, and the enchantment becomes more powerful with higher levels.
For example, at Level I, the damage is 0.5 per block, Level II adds 1.0 damage per block, Level III adds 1.5 damage per block, Level IV adds 2.0 damage per block, and Level V adds 2.5 damage per block.
Make sure you use Feather Falling on your boots while using this enchantment so as not to take too much damage yourself when falling. Similarly, Density cannot be used with certain enchantments on Mace, i.e., Smite, Bane of Arthropods, and Breach.
You might have seen that your sword has a sweeping attack that damages multiple enemies within a small radius when you perform a full-strength attack. However, the attack is not very effective and does not cause much damage to the enemies.
This is where a new enchantment, Sweeping Edge, comes into play. It simply amplifies the damage dealt by the sweeping attack mechanic of swords, making your area-of-effect (AoE) attacks much more effective.
Level I increases the damage to 50%, Level II increases the damage to 67%, and Level III increases the damage to 75%. This enchantment is incredibly useful for farming zombies, skeletons, or spiders.
Wind Burst is another enchantment specially designed for the Mace weapon. When you perform a smash attack with a Wind Burst-enchanted Mace, a special effect launches the player into the air.
At Level I, you will be propelled 7 blocks into the air; at Level II, the height increases to 14 blocks; at Level III, the height is 21 blocks. The best part is that you can create a series of chain Smash attacks on the mobs.
You can acquire Wind Burst found in ominous vaults within trial chambers. Otherwise, multiple chests are spread across the game where you can loot enchanted books or get them by trading from villagers.
One major disadvantage of this enchantment is that it does not reduce or prevent fall damage. Hence, you must pair Wind Burst with other enchantments such as Feather Falling, Elytra, Potion of Slow Falling, etc. This will prevent you from dying.
One of the coolest enchantments in the game is Riptide. This only works with Trident and has three Levels. When a trident enchanted with Riptide is thrown, it propels the player and the trident. It basically gives you the Aquaman effect.
You can use it to fly across rivers and other water bodies. This enchantment only works when fully submerged in water or standing on it. Besides this, it works underwater and when standing in the rain. As for the snowy biomes, Riptide activates if the player gets "wet" by snow or precipitation.
The distance by which they are propelled depends on the formula mentioned below.
While standing in water or rain- (6 × enchantment level) + 3 blocks. Similarly, while being underwater, it is (4 × enchantment level) + 3 blocks.
For example, you are thrown as high as 21 blocks for Level III while standing on water. It's important to note that this enchantment does not work with Loyalty and Channeling enchantments.
Channeling allows you to summon lighting during thunderstorms, giving the game a dramatic, powerful flair. It only works with Tridents and looks visually the best thing ever.
To perform the enchantment, you must throw the trident at a mob while standing within a certain range. The mob will then be struck by lightning, and in some cases, the lightning will cause changes to the mob or the environment.
For example, if a villager is hit with lightning, it will turn into a Witch. Likewise, when hit with lightning, a Creeper turns into a Charged Creeper, Pigs turn into Zombie Piglins, and Red Mooshrooms turn into brown and vice versa.
If you are someone who often uses bows and arrows, Infinity is the best enchantment for you in the game. This is how it works: it allows you to shoot arrows without consuming any of them from your inventory, as long as you have at least one arrow.
For example, if you have, say 10 arrows in your inventory, the game will still only consume one arrow, even after you shoot dozens of times, making it infinite. Also, it's important to note here that even if you have unlimited arrows, the bow will still keep losing its durability and eventually break.
There are a few limitations to this enchantment. It only works with regular arrows and not Spectral Arrows or Tipped Arrows. Furthermore, you cannot use both Mending and Infinity on the same bow.
We have another enchantment specially designed for bows. Flame, when applied to bows, can cause your arrows to set targets on fire upon impact. The player or the mob will continue to burn for about 5 seconds, dealing in 2 heart damage, and then it will go away.
You can use the Flame-enchanted bow to light up the campfires and even TNTs from far away to destroy a herd of mobs. Furthermore, Flame cannot be applied with Infinity enchantment; even if you try, it will simply override the other.
Loyalty enchantment, as the name itself speaks, only works with Tridents and is very loyal to you. In a literal sense, if you throw an enchanted Trident, it will come back to you. There are three levels to it, each with a different return speed.
With Level I, you get the Trident back to you in a second; Level II takes about 0.8 seconds; and Level III, the speed is 0.6 seconds. This enchantment does not work with Riptide, so you cannot combine both on a Trident.
Another unique aspect you might notice is the difference between the Bedrock and Java additions. If you throw the Loyalty enchanted Trident in the void in the Java version, it will not return to you. However, in the bedrock version, the enchantment works when thrown into the void.
This is a pretty straightforward enchantment. When applied to crossbows, Multishot shoots three arrows in one shot and consumes only a single arrow from the inventory. After shooting, you can collect only the middle arrow, and the other two go away.
Although this is highly efficient against a group of mobs, this does not last long. Each shot fired consumes three durability points per shot, unlike the usual one point. Hence, the crossbow is destroyed much faster if you constantly use this enchantment.
Piercing enchantment works with crossbows by allowing the arrows to pass through multiple mobs or players in one shot, depending on the Level. For example, if you have Level I of Piercing, it will pass through two mobs; with Level IV, it can pass through five mobs.
This is best used in PvP combats since it can also pass through shields, making winning those combat battles with other players easier. Furthermore, this works with any kind of tipped arrows, making it highly efficient.
Another enchantment you can apply to the bow is Power. It increases the base damage of arrows by 25% per level of the enchantment.
You can upgrade up to five Levels of Power enchantment, with Level 1 increasing damage by 25% and Level V increasing by 125%. This enchantment can be used to kill mobs and players in combat.
Punch is a similar enchantment to that of Knockback. You can apply this to arrows, causing mobs or players to be pushed back when hit. The major usage for this is to keep a safe distance from mobs during combats, especially in tight spaces or when you’re surrounded.
Whereas Quick Charge is a crossbow-specific enchantment in Minecraft that reduces the time it takes to load and fire the weapon. If you often use a crossbow, this might be super helpful. There are three Levels to this enchantment where Level III can turn a crossbow into a faster alternative to bows.
This is the only fishing rod enchantment in the game. that improves your chances of catching valuable loot while fishing. You might often use fishing rods to catch treasures, especially enchanted books.
Using this enchantment might increase the odds of getting some rare books along with name tags, saddles, etc. There are three levels to this, with Level III maximizing the treasure catch rates and minimizing junk probability.
You might have heard of the Curse of Vanishing enchantment. Any item with this enchantment will disappear permanently when you die instead of dropping it on the ground for retrieval.
Although this item does not have any direct benefits, you can still use it during PvP combats. Other players will no longer be able to loot the items you drop after you die because of the curse.
It is one of the most underrated enchantments yet super useful. When applied to a tool (pickaxe, axe, shovel, or hoe), Silk Touch changes how blocks behave when mined. Instead of dropping their usual items, the block itself is harvested.
For example, if you mine stone blocks, you will get stone instead of cobblestone. Likewise, Mining grass blocks give you the grass block rather than dirt. You can apply this enchantment to Axes, Pickaxes, Shovels, and Hoes.
There are a ton of advantages to using Silk Touch on your tools. This is the only way you can actually collect ice blocks without them melting.
And that is all in this guide. We have mentioned almost every enchantment available in the game, from armor enchantments to every single weapon enchantment you can find. Some are a must-have for your tools, while some might only be used occasionally.
