Exploring Sakurajima: First Look

IBefore talking more about the new Pals and Oil Stronghold, the first thing that stuck with me was its exceptional beauty. After roaming about and checking out different biomes and Pals, I came across the massive Mushroom Wetlands and the much-awaited cherry blossom-laden mountains, which we all saw in the trailer.

There is no doubt in accepting the fact that the developers outdid themselves. After playing for months now, I truly did not expect that the game has so much to give.

The island's environment is Japanese-inspired and has a surprising variety of biomes, from scorching volcanic plains to serene hot springs.

This variety keeps exploration exciting, with each biome presenting unique challenges and resources. Also, look for hidden caves beneath these volcanic rock formations where you might find some new pals and treasures.

Behold the New Pals of Sakurajima

Apart from the obvious beauty of the island, I was most excited about the new Pals, which I noticed in the trailer as well. Of course, no Palworld update is complete without new creatures to tame!

From the moment you enter the island, you will come across some unique pals that are very powerful. Be careful; they might look super cute, but it can be challenging to capture them. Anyways, there are 10 new variants and 14 new Pals types. Let’s check some of them out below.

1. Croajiro

Croajiro is a pal that resembles a frog. It is super easy to find and can be captured throughout the map. It is available both during the day and night. Since this is a water pal, it will be a great addition to the team.

You can assign Croajiro to your base for watering, gathering basic materials like berries and rocks, and even moving stuff around the base. This Pal swells its abdomen, and you can climb on top of it to jump in the air.

2. Lullu

Lullu is yet another adorable Pal that can be found in specific areas roaming on grasslands since she is a grass-like Pal.

You can use them on your base since they are very good at increasing the growth rate of the crops. Other than this, they can be helpful in gathering crops around you and other handiwork on your base.

3. Shroomer and Shroomer Noct

Another grass-like Pal found on the Sakurajima island is Shroomer. They primarily reside in the Mushroom Wetlands and can be captured pretty easily using any standard Pal pod.

As for the skill, the spores slow the rate at which the SAN value of allies at the base decreases. Although they aren’t much help on the base, they can still be used for lumbering, gathering plant resources, and even planting.

The Shroomer Noct is another variant of the Shroomer and serves as a dark-type pal. You can only find these at night on the Mushroom Wetland. Both variants serve similar purposes at the base. While Shroomer possibly drops mushrooms and berries, the Noct version drops venom gland and other mysterious mushrooms.

4. Kikit

Kikit is an armadillo pal who can be found exclusively on the beaches of Sakurajima island, both during the day and at night. This can be a huge help to your base since it’s involved in mining and also helps carry supplies, thus reducing the crude oil weight in the inventory.

Other than this, you will need a ton of crude oil for various purposes in this game. And the process of extracting the oil is incredibly slow. However, the Kikit pals occasionally drop crude oil when hunted and killed. Hence, you can visit the locations where they are found and collect crude oil.

5. Sootseer

This is a dark, fire-type pal that can be a bit difficult to find on the new island. It's located in a very specific place that only appears at night. It took me a lot of spawns to find and capture this pal.

When killed, it took drops of crude oil; however, since they are pretty rare, it's better not to kill them. They can be helpful in mining and farming on the base. You can also assign them to the Ranch, and they might help you dig up some bones.

6. Prixter

Another dark, ground-type pal is located around the beaches on Sakurajima island. It can help you find the dungeon exits. However, it wasn’t much use to me since it wasn’t accurate while looking for the exits. Other than this, you can use it for lumbering purposes when it reaches level 3.

7. Knocklem

Knocklem is a boss-type pal and can only be found in a specific location, i.e., the southwest portion of Sakurajima Island. This is a level 55 pal that can put up a tough fight before you can capture it, so make sure you are well-prepared.

It is an excellent pal to help you gather resources and is also very powerful, so it can be very helpful in mining as well as transporting items. The most interesting part of this Pal is that even if its body parts are scattered, it can reassemble itself and resume activity.

8. Yakumo

Yakumo is a neutral-type pal located exclusively on Sakurajima island in a specific area.

When fighting with Yakumo in your party, you'll have a higher chance of encountering other Pals with the same passive skill. This means you're more likely to find other stealthy, nocturnal Pals like Yakumo while exploring at night.

9. Dogen

Dogen can be found around the Moonflower Tower area of Sakurajima island. This is a very powerful pal; hence, it's best to use a dark-type pal against it. Then, once it's weak, you can throw a legendary pal and capture it.

It can help you teleport to the nearest base. Dogen’s main attack is to charge destructive energy toward its energy, which only gets more powerful as it passes each level.

10. Dazemu

This ground-type pal can be found on the beaches of Sakurajima island and the Twilight Dunes, the northeast desert region above Bamboo Groves.

Now, Dazemu has the ability to run very fast over sand. Hence, riding on it and running away from the enemies in the desert can be useful.

11. Mimog

Mimog looks like a treasure chest combined with a dog-like creature. It is a neutral-type pal that is found in almost all the locations on the Palworld map. It can be both challenging and fun to catch this pal. If you are not careful enough, it will run away from you at an excessively fast speed and kind of vanish away.

Well, if you catch Mimog, it can help you open any chest without keys. However, the type of treasure chest depends on the skill level.

12. Meteor Event Pals

Now, there are three Pals, Selyne, Xenovader, and Xenogard, who spawn when a meteorite drops on the island. There is no way to know where the meteorite might drop, so it can be very difficult to capture.

Xenovader can help obtain meteorite fragments and increase the damage done to ores. Similarly, having Xenoguard on your team can help you obtain Meteorite fragments and Pure Quartz.

Oil Rig Stronghold

By now if you have already played a few hours on the new Sakurajima update, you might know the importance of crude oil and plasteel. They are the cornerstone in creating new armor, weapons, and even base parts.

You can set up an oil plant to get crude oil, but it takes a lot of time and electricity to produce the oil. However, we now have the new Oil Rig on the new update, which has multiple chests containing crude oil and other treasures.

This is a Level 55 location, so you need to be prepared to fight a lot of enemies who can instantly destroy you with their guns. However, they are highly likely to drop crude oil once you kill them, which can be a huge advantage.

Speaking of the location, it isn’t land-based. Hence, you must spawn to Marsh Island and sail southeast to discover the Oil Rig. Furthermore, the goal here isn’t about winning over this structure but rather than surviving and gathering all the loot. It took me multiple attempts just to reach the oil rig and multiple more to collect all the treasures.

Tip: The turrets on this oil rig do little to no damage, so you can easily move past them.

Beyond the Single-player Grind: PvP Arena

Another new addition to this update is the PvP Arena on a secluded island southeast of the Tower of the PIDF on the main map.

You can invite your friends and engage in a 4v4 battle by bringing your three most powerful Pals along with you. The aim is pretty simple here: defeat all three of your opponent's Pals or the opposing Pal Trainer themselves. The first team to achieve this victory condition wins the match.

The entire concept of the arena kind of sounds like a Pokemon battle where the trainer was allowed to choose three Pokemon to battle. But here, you can also get involved with your guns and rocket launchers.

The PvP Arena gives that thrilling and strategic touch to the game, especially if you have a lot of friends or a community with which to play. You can set up a dedicated server for Palworld and host such battles with the community.

Everything New in Tech Tree and More

The second you get the new game update, you can open the tech tree and find a ton of new additions that we will be talking about below.

At Level 15, you get access to an Ore Mining Site. Your base no longer needs to be near or located around these iron-rich sites. Simply build this and create more.

At Level 19, you can get the Ring of Mercy. If you wear the ring and attack any Pal, their health will not go below 1.

At Level 28, we have the Lock Picking Tool, which is super helpful, especially when you are on the Oil Rig. It will help open any treasure chests that require a copper key.

From Level 50-55, you will have items like the Crude Oil Extractor we discussed earlier. Plasteel is required to create Plasteel armor as well as a brand new sphere called the Ultimate Sphere.

You can also unlock different weapons such as the Flame Thrower, Laser Rifle, Grenade Launcher, etc. Other than this, as you move ahead, you can get access to the sulfur and coal mine for your base as well.

Apart from the tech tree, you will find multiple base building improvements, such as wooden defensive walls and a glass building system with glass roofs, stairs, doors, and pillars. Similarly, the new update has increased the capacity of how many Pals you can have in your base. You can also sort them out by different elements in the box, such as by level, work suitability, etc.

Is the Sakurajima Update Worth Waiting For?d

Overall, the new update is worth more than you could have imagined. Everything mentioned above in this review is pretty much all you will encounter on the island.

However, there are hidden dungeons, rare meteorite events, sky drops, and multiple other aspects you will absolutely love once you come across them.

Surely, the island itself is smaller compared to previous areas. However, the condensed environment is jam-packed with activities and secrets to discover, making it feel denser and more rewarding to explore.

You will be spending a ton of time catching all the new Pals, making the entire Palworld experience fresh and something to look forward to. If you haven’t updated yet, this is your call to explore and relive the game.
