As someone who has played Minecraft for over a decade, I found it pretty simple back then yet satisfying. You simply had to punch down trees to collect wood, build a dirt house, and hope the creepers didn’t find me before sunrise. But, once you get into the world of mods, it's a game-changer.

Whether you are a beginner or have played for some time, this will enhance the entire gaming experience. They turned my blocky world into a vibrant playground of advanced tech, endless biomes, jaw-dropping builds, and challenges that made vanilla Minecraft look like a walk in the park.

For example: the first time I installed OptiFine, I couldn’t believe how smooth and stunning my game looked. The day I discovered Biomes O’ Plenty, my sense of adventure was reignited as if I were again exploring Minecraft for the first time.

These are only some examples out of hundreds of mods on the web that are worth trying. There is a mode for everything, whether you want to try new dimensions or simply want to automate every task in the game.

So, we have created this extensive list of some of the best mods in Minecraft that will level up your game. This list contains the mods I think are the best and is based on multiple other players' reviews.

Let’s check them out below.

1. Just Enough Items (JEI)

The first mod in this list is JEI. It is an essential mod for players who want a lightweight, efficient way to view recipes, item uses, and other crafting-related information in Minecraft. Earlier this year, this mod became the first in Minecraft to cross 300M downloads, and it continues to be among the best.

This mod helps to display all crafting, smelting, brewing, and mod-specific recipes. You can search for any item to see how to craft it or what it can be used for. Moreover, you can use advanced search bar filters such as "@modname" to filter items from specific mods.

Some advanced search options are also available, such as prefacing a word with # to search by tooltip text, using $ to search for Ore Dictionary names, using % to search for items within a specific creative mode tab, etc.

Furthermore, JEI can be automatically adapted to any installed mods, showing recipes and uses for modded items. It even works seamlessly with mods such as Applied Energistics 2, Create, and more.

2. Mouse Tweaks

This is yet another one of the best mods for your inventory. Mouse Tweaks enhance the way you interact with the inventory by introducing new mouse-based controls. It’s especially useful for managing large inventories or sorting through items quickly.

For example: Hold the left mouse button to pick up the item. Then, hover across the inventory to pick up the items of the same type. Similarly, hold down the shift button and LMB and drag to quickly transfer multiple stacks to another inventory or chest.

Another super helpful tweak here is by using the mouse wheel. Start by hovering over an item stack and scroll down. This will move the items from the stack into the other inventory one at a time. It is useful for precise adjustments when transferring items.

3. Biomes O' Plenty

When it comes to having more Biomes in Minecraft, the best mod that can give you everything and more is Biomes O' Plenty. It has perhaps been the most popular mod for over a decade and has over 50+ new biomes you can check out in the game.

Some biomes found here are Cherry Blossom Grove, Lavender Fields, Maple Woods, Muskeg, and many more. These are only a part of the underworld; however, there are multiple biomes for the Nether world, such as Crystalline Chasm, Undergrowth, Erupting Inferno, etc.

Not only this, but you can explore a wide range of new plants, trees, and flowers added with this mod to enhance the overall experience. You will also come across some exclusive tree types, and new types of grass, dirt, and sand that match the unique biomes.

4. Regions Unexplored

We have yet another biome-specific mod that adds over 70+ biomes to Minecraft. The best part of these biomes is that they can be used together with other mods such as Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, etc.

It also includes custom vegetation, new block types, and specialized structures to explore, providing a diverse and enriched gameplay experience. Some of our favorite biomes from the Overworld in this mod are Alpha Grove, Maple Forest, Willow Forest, etc.

Some exceptionally beautiful caves or overworld biomes you will find in Regions Unexplored are Prismachasm, Bioshroom Caves, Redstone Caves, etc. Other than this, there are some Nether biomes, such as Blackstone Basin, Mycotoxic Undergrowth, and Glistering Meadow.

Not only biomes, but there are also 100’s unique blocks added to this mod as well, such as Cave Blocks (Corpse Flower, Dropleaf, etc.), Plant Blocks (Clover, Flowering Lily Pad, Giant Lily Pad, etc.), Dirt Block (Argillite Grass Block, Overgrown Bone Block, etc.), and many more such blocks in different categories.

5. Terralith

Next on our list is Terralith. Well, this is yet another of our favorite mods that gives you 95+ new biomes in Minecraft. Not only this, it brings updates to almost every vanilla biome in the game for a fresh new look.

Some of the biomes found here are Yellowstone (inspired by real-life US National Park), Yosemite Cliffs, Volcanic Peaks, and many more. Terralith introduces new terrain types, such as canyons, floating islands, and deep ocean trenches, elevating the visual appeal and gameplay.

There are other biomes that give life to our fantasies, such as Amethyst Rainforest, Scarlet Mountains, etc. Similar to what we have seen in the mods mentioned above, you will come across multiple cave biomes, too, such as Underground Jungle, Frostfire Caves, etc., that add new elements to the game.

The new version of the game that has been recently released brought in some updates too, like: “Moonlight Grove/Valley have the Acacia Logs from its trees replaced with Pale Oak Logs,” “Pink-colored leaves in Sakura Valley/Grove and Spring Skylands are replaced with Cherry Leaves or Azalea Leaves,” and other minor changes.

6. Alex’s Mobs

Alex’s Mobs is a comprehensive mod that adds over 85 unique creatures to Minecraft by introducing a variety of real-world and fantasy-inspired mobs. Each mob is thoughtfully designed with distinct behaviors, biomes, and interactions, offering both aesthetic and functional contributions to the game.

This mod also provides you with an Animal Dictionary that has all the info about the animals you will encounter in the game. Furthermore, each of the creatures or animals in this mod drops something that can be used to craft unique weapons, arrows, potions, and armor with special effects.

For example, we have Mosse that have the ability to drop their antlers, Bald Eagle (the best of all), Bison, etc, which fall under the real-world category.

Some of the fantasy-inspired mobs are Comb Jelly, Bone Serpent, Bunfungs, and a lot more. Each of these is found in specific biomes and also be tamed for various purposes. The one mob that really creeps everyone out is the Cave Centipede; watch out for that,

7. Sodium

Next up, we have Sodium. This is a highly optimized Minecraft performance enhancement mod designed for Fabric and NeoForge mod loaders.

It aims to significantly improve the rendering engine of the game, providing smoother gameplay and better frame rates, especially on systems with lower-end hardware.

The major usage of this mod is its capability to dramatically enhance frame rates by optimizing the game's rendering pipeline. Many users report frame rate increases from 2-5x compared to vanilla Minecraft.

Multiple users have compared this mod with OptiFine and found Sodium to be better performing and compatible with the game and graphics.

8. Create

Create is one of the most innovative and rewarding mods for Minecraft. Its emphasis on mechanical power and aesthetic automation gives players a fresh take on resource management and creativity.

Well, for starters, the learning curve might feel a bit steep since this mod is more technically inclined. But there are tons of guides that help you visualize the entire structure you are building.

In this mod, you will need a lot of iron, zinc, and andesite alloy to craft almost everything. Later you will also need Andesite casing to craft a lot of machines. To automate machines and other processes, you will need power; the first thing you can build with the Create mod is a Water wheel.

You can also look forward to building moving structures, such as elevators, conveyor belts, and rotating platforms. Beyond functionality, the mod also emphasizes aesthetics with blocks like brass casings, cogwheels, and conveyor belts, which add visual charm to builds.

9. Mod Menu

There are thousands of amazing mods on the web that you can add to your game. But it can be difficult to manage all of them. This is where the Mod Menu mod comes into action. It offers a highly user-friendly way to manage and view installed mods within the game.

The mod adds a dedicated screen that lists all installed mods, providing an overview that is both searchable and sortable. Furthermore, you can filter mods by their functionality, such as client-side or library mods, which are labeled with special badges for easy identification.

10. Oreganized

Next up, we have Oreganized. It introduces unique features and mechanics centered around its core additions of new metals—Silver and Lead—along with the alloy Electrum.

Lead is naturally found in the world through ore blocks. It spawns underground at -40 to -20 locations and can be smelted using a cauldron. You can also obtain lead through naturally occurring structures called Boulders. They are commonly found in plains biomes and meadows, adding an exploration element to resource gathering.

Silver can be found at Y level -15 to 5. You can use this shiny metal to craft mirrors that can be used for decoration purposes. Also, if you forge gold and silver together, you can create a new alloy called Electrum. This can be further used for armor and weapons, a lightweight alternative to Netherite armor.

Other unique features of this mod are Bush Hammer, Shrapnel Bomb, Brain Damage, Lead Toxicity, and so much more.

11. Tree Harvester

The Tree Harvester mod allows you to quickly and seamlessly harvest entire trees by chopping down just one log. No more spending enormous time trying to cut down trees.

Once the tree is chopped, the leaves will instantly start decaying. Once the leaves decay, saplings are automatically replanted, ensuring a sustainable process. This is compatible with trees and resources from other mods, including warped stems, crimson trees, and even giant mushrooms.

To ensure the process does not affect other trees around and make proper configuration settings, you can specify which axes can or cannot harvest trees using a blacklist configuration file. This supports modded tools.

Furthermore, the harvesting speed can be adjusted based on the number of logs in the tree, allowing for a more realistic or balanced experience.

12. BetterEnd

Finally we have something worth mentioning designed specially to overhaul the End dimension. BetterEnd features 24+ unique biomes, each with its own atmosphere, terrain, and ecosystem, such as Amberlands, Blossoming Spires, Crystal Mountains, etc.

Each of these biomes has a unique set of trees, ores, plants, and blocks. For example, in Amberlands, you can mine the Amber Ores, which can be further turned into Amber Gems, and then into Amber Blocks.

Moving on, the mod adds a wide array of building materials, such as nine wood types and seven stone types with unique textures.

You might come across some unique mobs in these biomes, such as Ender Slimes, Dragonflies, Silk Moths, and many more. Some of these are passive, while some are hostile mobs that provide challenging combat encounters.

13. Croptopia

With over 37M+ downloads on CurseForge, Croptopia is the mod of the decade. This mod ensures you do not go hungry and rely on boring food throughout the gameplay.

It introduces over 250 unique food items, 58 new crops, and 26 tree-based crops. Some crops you can get here are lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc, along with some exotic plants such as vanilla and cinnamon.

As for trees, they can be grown using saplings found or crafted in the game, such as bananas, oranges, cherries, and coconuts. You can refer to the documents provided with this mod to guide you through the 200+ recipes.

Simply create a beautiful farm grow crops, and trees, and create delicious food to keep your hunger index at the lowest. Apart from the above-mentioned addition, you also get to craft tools such as mortar and pestle, cutting boards, and mixing bowls, which are necessary for creating complex dishes.

14. Fresh Animations

If you are looking to make your Minecraft experience 100 times better, well, you need to install the Fresh Animations mod. This is basically a resource pack for Minecraft that transforms the look and feel of mobs by introducing highly detailed, fluid animations.

This pack makes over 70+ mobs look pretty real and basically breathes life into them. After installing this mod, you can instantly see the intricate detailing on each of the mobs, such as the Wolves, Bees, Creepers, Spiders, etc.

The animations you might notice could be some subtle eye and head movement, tail wagging, squinting the eyes, etc. For example: if you come close to a villager, their eyes follow you.

15. Nature's Compass

Nature's Compass is one of the mods that we use often and is highly useful and practical. It basically serves as a tool to locate specific biomes in your game world.

You first need to craft the mod using four blocks of wood, four saplings, and a compass. Once crafted, simply press the right mouse button that will open the menu or, better say, the GUI of the compass. You can search for and select any biome you want to locate here. Then, click on Start Search.

The mod will show you the coordinates and the distance you are from that biome. Simply follow the compass directions on the screen, and that’s all. Furthermore, if you are not interested in walking hundreds of kilometers, you can simply click on Teleport, and within seconds, you will reach the specific biome you selected.

This mod also has one limitation: certain biomes may require manual adjustments, like changing height levels for cave biomes.

16. Cooking for Blockheads

Another mod that focuses on food preparation and crafting meals is Cooking for Blockheads. If you are someone who enjoys farming, cooking, and managing food production, this is perfect for you. It has over 143M+ downloads on CurseForge, and the features speak for themselves.

You are given a recipe book to create a perfect dish and some exquisite kitchen equipment. Such as you get a cooking table, fridge, sink, and an oven. You can even sort out nutritional recipes to maximize hunger replenishment.

These kitchen blocks are pretty functional for storing food as well, such as the cabinet, fridge, etc. Furthermore, the kitchen sink may not be of direct usage in the kitchen, but it can be used as an infinite water source.

17. Toast Control

If you are tired of all the pop-ups in the game, Toast Control might solve the problem for you. It allows you to customize or completely disable in-game toast notifications, which are pop-up messages for advancements, tutorials, recipes, and other events.

Although the mod disables recipe and tutorial notifications by default, you can configure it to disable all the other pop-ups too.

Furthermore, you can choose not to completely disable the notifications but instead modify their background appearance. Options include translucent or fully transparent backgrounds, which can reduce distractions while playing the game.

However, if you are a beginner, it’s better not to disable the notifications since they can be pretty useful for guidance.

18. Mekanism

Let’s talk about the technically advanced mod with an expansive array of high-tech machinery and tools. Mekanism uses a tier-based system for upgrades, enabling progression from basic to ultimate levels in items like factories, energy cubes, and more.

Start off by collecting some Osmium Ore, which you will need in abundance to craft a ton of machinery and other tools. Then, smelt these ores to create some Osmium Ingots. Moving ahead, you will need an energy source before building other high-tech machines.

You can power the machines with Heat Generator, Wind Generator, Solar Generator, etc. They work in a very simple manner. Simply feed them any type of fuel, such as coal, and generate energy.

Some machines you will be building with this mod are Digital Miner, Jetpacks, Factories, etc. Other advanced forms of power generators you can craft are Bio-Generators for eco-friendly energy, Fusion Reactors, and more. There is so much more to explore with this mod. So go ahead and install it now.

19. 3D Skin Layers

Let’s talk about how you can stand out in the game. The 3D Skin Layers mod can help transform the typically flat second layer of player skins into a 3D-rendered version.

There are basically two layers on the player: your skin and the outer 2D layer, which is the effects. However, they look pretty boring and unrecognizable at times such as a headphone on your head. However, this mod gives the visual appeal of player skins by giving the second layer a 3D effect.

Furthermore, speaking of compatibility, this is fully client-side, meaning it does not require installation on servers and works seamlessly in multiplayer.

20. Immersive Aircraft

The last one on our list is the Immersive Aircraft mod. It is by far the most unique mod out there and another one of our favorites. It introduces a collection of rustic aircraft designed for travel, exploration, and transport.

There are multiple options or, better say, aircraft available. For example: Biplane is perfect for solo exploration with decent speed and maneuverability, Gyrodyne is a two-seater aircraft and completely human-powered, etc.

Each aircraft is hand-crafted, which is the best way to assemble them. Such as for Gyrodyne you will need a propeller, large sail, etc. Each vehicle has an inventory, weapon slots, and multiple other upgrades that can be added further.

Well, this is it for now. These are the best ones we could put so far when it comes to mod and making the Minecraft experience a lot better.

However, there are tons of other mods that are exceptionally and equally amazing. You can visit different websites such as CurseForge for more information and install them in your game.
