Minecraft Introduces Everything Copper: Golem, Armor, and Gear

We have been playing Minecraft since the beginning of time, when the most exciting update was colored wool. Over the years, we’ve seen everything from bees to boats with chests, but copper? That stuff’s mostly been sitting in my storage room collecting dust. Until now.

With the latest beta update (1.21.100.23), Mojang finally gave copper the love it deserved, and it’s a game-changer. We’re talking copper tools, copper armor, oxidizing chests, and yes, the Copper Golem. Not just a cute mob, but an actual utility-driven companion that sorts your items and breathes life into your base.

However, it is worth noting that this is currently in beta version and under development. Mojang has only released this for the Bedrock edition, so make sure you have this version to test out the new features.

Copper Golem

The most awaited Coppe Golem is here. You might be wondering, how do players already know that Copper Golem exists even before its launch? Well, back in Minecraft Live 2021, the Copper Golem was one of the three mobs in the community Mob Vote, alongside the Glare and the Allay.

It did the bare minimum back then; overall, it was a cute mob. But it lost the vote to the Allay, which got added in Minecraft 1.19 instead. So, Mojang decided to bring it back with a lot more functionality in 2025.

Let’s talk about everything it does and how you can summon it:

Summoning Copper Golem

Unlike any other mob or tool, you cannot craft a Copper Golem; instead, you need to summon it or build it manually in your world.

Here are the steps you must follow:

  1. Place a Copper Block on the ground.
  2. Place a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o'Lantern on top.

Once you place the carved pumpkin, the Copper Golem will spawn on the spot. It also drops a Copper Chest nearby when summoned.

There is also something really interesting about the new mob. Since you already know that Copper oxidizes over time, you can summon four different color variants of Golems in the same manner.

For example, if you use an unoxidised copper block with a Carved Pumpkin head, you get an unoxidised variant of Copper Golem. Similarly, you can summon the Exposed, Oxidized, and Weathered Golem.

What It Does?

This golem is obsessed with tidiness; it grabs items from Copper Chests and then goes on a sorting spree, placing items into regular Chests or Trapped Chests nearby.

It’ll only carry one item type at a time, up to 16 items in a stack, and it’ll only place them where they belong, either into empty chests or ones that already contain the same item type.

It has a search radius of 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically. Also, the Copper Golem goes into a resting period of 7 minutes if it doesn’t find any match after checking up to 10 chests.

Logic Behind Item Sorting

  • If it’s not holding anything, it’ll search any Copper Chest nearby (yes, even oxidized and waxed variants) and pick up one item type.
  • Once it's holding items, it switches to search mode and checks for chests it can place the stack into.
  • It ignores junk piles, only commits if the chest is empty or contains the same item.

Since it is a mob, what happens if it dies? The Copper Golem drops 1–3 Copper Ingot and sometimes even Copper Button. The best way to know more and experience this is to try it yourself and see how the sorting system works with the Copper Golem.

Copper Chest

As mentioned above, Copper Golem comes with a Copper Chest. It is a brand-new chest type introduced in the latest beta update. Functionally, it works just like a regular chest, with 27 slots of storage, but features some unique copper-specific enhancements.

Just like any other copper block in the game, this too follows the same principle of oxidation, i.e., exposed → weathered → oxidized stages. Similarly, if you want to preserve the look, you can wax it with a honeycomb.

And no, oxidation doesn’t affect how the chest functions; it’s purely visual. But it does make for some great aging builds.

There are two ways to get the Copper Chest.

  1. Summon the Copper Golem and get a chest along with it.
  2. Or you can combine eight Copper Ingots + a Chest in a crafting table.

The Copper Chest is where the golem grabs items from. Once you toss items in, the Copper Golem scoops them up and starts distributing them into regular chests around your base based on item type.

Note: You can also get a double copper chest. Simply place two copper blocks side-by-side and put the carved pumpkins on each of them. This will give you two Copper Golems but also a double Copper Chest instead of two separate ones.

Copper Tools & Weapons

To be honest, copper has been the most unused resource in the game. But now you can craft all the tools and weapons with it. Here is a list of all the weapons and tools you can craft using copper.

  • Copper Axe
  • Copper Hoe
  • Copper Pickaxe
  • Copper Shovel
  • Copper Sword

It is mentioned that the Copper tools sit between Stone and Iron in the tool/weapon hierarchy. If you have Stone weapons, instead of shifting directly to Iron, you can craft the Copper items. Now, their mining tier may be the same as Stone, but Mojang says it has much higher durability,  destroys blocks faster, and has enchantability higher than Diamond.

Surely, you cannot mine diamonds, redstone, or ancient debris with this, but it can be a good upgrade from stone. Also, it looks pretty cool and all its oxidised variants.

Copper Armor Set

With all the copper tools and weapons, you can also craft a complete set of Copper Armor. These include the Copper Helmet, Copper Chestplate, Copper Leggings, and Copper Boots. It follows the same crafting mechanism; simply swap in Copper Ingots, and you can craft all of the above.

Speak of durability and performance, well, it sits right between Leather and Iron armor. A full set of copper armor will give you five chest plates on the bar, while the iron armor set gives seven and a half, making it slightly better than the former. However, when you look at the leather set, it gives three and a half.

Overall, it isn’t the best, but it's still cool to have in your inventory. If gathering iron is taking some time, then copper might be a great option to consider in the early game.

And that is it from the new Minecraft copper update. Although they aren’t officially calling it that, since it's all about copper, this name makes more sense. As mentioned, this hasn’t been launched yet and is still in beta mode, so you may have to wait for a more stable version to enjoy the game.
